Skincare Sparknotes

Skin is so important to me. Having a clear face gives me the freedom to skip makeup if I want to, which is kinda how I measure “good skin” tbh. I know my skin is in a good place if I can go to lunch with my friends and I don’t feel like I need to be wearing a full face of makeup. It’s all about only having to put a little cover up here, and a touch of blush there, and then being set for the day, you know ?

I haven’t always had clear skin though, so I definitely don’t take it for granted now that I do. I had a lot of acne throughout high school and it kinda lingered into my earlier years of college.

It took me a second to figure out what worked best for me. It took hundreds of products and a few dermatologists before I felt confident with my skin everyday. What I’ve found is that it takes consistency to get your face to a good place. You have to really be on top of it-- seeing the right doctors and finding the right products.

There are a few simple things that really just work for my skin and I want to share some of my secrets with you, so here we are ! I’ve put together a “Skincare Sparknotes” to keep your skin glowing. But remember, everyone’s skin is so different, so what works for me might be little different for you.

Before I get into my tips and tricks, I wanted to remind you that maintaining a healthy diet, staying hydrated, and avoiding stress can have a really big affect on your skin. I don’t feel like I need to really expand on those three things because I’m sure you already take good care of your body, but I wanted to quickly mention them because they are important <3

Ok. Now for the good stuff… here’s my Skincare Sparknotes for glowing skin:

Keep up with your facials

I quickly realized that facials are key, and my esthetician is totally my best friend. I see her every two weeks. Literally, we talk about everything. She knows what I did last night, how hungover I am, and she doesn’t judge me for showing up to my appointment in last night’s makeup.

When I am home in San Diego, I love to go to Shawn at Derm SD. She’s my absolute favorite person. I always leave with a glow.

When I moved to New York it was really important for me to find a new spa so I could keep up with my skin regimen. While it’s recommended that the average person gets a facial once a month, I treat my skin with a facial every two weeks.

I looked for places that offered a really tailored experience. I didn’t want to pick a facial from a menu, you know ? I like when my esthetician customizes the experience to my skin, because everyone’s skin is so different and has totally different needs. That’s how I picked Tribeca Med Spa. When I get to my appointment, we start by talking about how my skin feels with the weather and if I feel dry.

You gotta find someone who just knows what they’re doing. And as weird as it sounds, having your face rubbed down feels fantastic.

Most facials implement steam. This helps open up your pores and clear out any dirt that could be trapped in your skin. While each facial should be a little different, I start all of my facials off with dermaplane.

Okay so like wtf is dermaplane ??

Dermaplane is basically when your esthetician removes your outermost layer of dead skin and peach fuzz with a scalpel. Sounds kinda intense, but it’s not at all, and the results are super dope.

It’s pretty much exfoliation x10. And I’m really big on exfoliation. My esthetician recommends people go every 4-6 weeks.

The results ? My skin is always left glowing, and makeup application is so much better. Also, anytime you remove dead skin your serums can penetrate your skin easier. So basically, this helps your skincare products absorb into your skin better.

Maintaining a regular skin regimen

I have found that being on top with my skincare products has kept my skin looking young AF. I constantly get carded and I love it every. single. time.

Once you figure out the products that work for you, stick with it. Do it every morning and every night. Because let’s just be clear. Washing your face is like brushing your teeth, and if you don’t do it, ew.

Also. Take your products down your neck and onto your chest ! By this I mean, make sure you apply your products to those areas as well.

Sunscreen

Sunscreen is soooo important. I can’t stress this enough. If you’re wondering if you need it, then you do.

The sun ages your skin by giving you wrinkles and sunspots. Not cute. I always coat my face, neck, and arms when I’m going to be outside.

It’s great because by following these tips I get to choose if I wear makeup or not. I never feel as though I’m a slave to makeup or that I can’t leave the house without a fresh face. Having good skin takes care of that for me.

Here are a few of my ride or die skincare products that I’m obsessed with <3 As always, click on the pictures to shop !

NuDerma Skin Wand

This thing is bae. Kinda looks like a vibrator, but it’s not. I primarily use it for spot treatment, but it can also be used to reduce the appearance of fine lines and aging. It also treats acne scars. I love it because it instantly takes away redness, and it rapidly treats acne. When I use it on my breakouts, they are literally gone overnight. It works by sending painless electric currents to the bacteria in your skin to clear it up.

SkinCeuticals Phyto Corrective Masque

I didn’t realize how important it was to use face masks until I moved to New York. The weather here is much drier than the weather in California. And a little down time is always good too. I love this mask. It’s calming and soothing, and great for all skin types. It leaves my skin feeling plump and radiant. I use it twice a week to help hydrate my skin. It’s a must in my beauty regimen.

SkinCeuticals Clarifying Clay Masque

I also love the SkinCeuticals Clarifying Clay Masque. I use this mask 1-2 times a week to help decongest pores and lift impurities. I primarily use it on my nose, because that’s the only area that I get blackheads, but feel free to use it anywhere that you feel congested. This clarifying mask is a staple in my skincare routine.

Zo Skin Health by Zein Obagi Gentle Cleanser

This is my all-time favorite face wash. It kinda reminds me of the SkinCeuticals Phyto Corrective Masque that I mentioned earlier. They are both just super calming and leave my skin feeling fresh AF. I actually won’t wash my face with anything else. To take it to another extreme: I read that Khloe Kardashian washes her face three times every morning/night, so now I wash my face 3x every morning/night.

Healthy Skin Vitamin E & Aloe Vera Capsules

Staying moisturized is also super important. I am obsessed with these little capsules. These are great when you are feeling on the dry side. They smell so yummy and they keep my skin silky smooth all day long. I use these in the AM and PM.

Le Lift: Anti-Wrinkle Flash Eye Revitalizer

Did I buy these for the photo ? Absolutely. But are they worth it ? 100% This two-step treatment is super hydrating for under the eyes. And who wouldn’t want to do laundry with Chanel branded eye patches covering up the sleep they didn’t get from the night before ? The kit comes with a rollerball and then eye patches to seal in the serum. Click the photo to shop.
